Why I Always Mention the “Other” Ring
After twelve years of planning proposals, there’s one detail that causes more sleepless nights for my clients than the venue, the music or even what they’re going to say: the ring.
It makes sense. Guessing someone’s exact taste, in secret, under pressure, feels like the highest-stakes decision of the whole evening. What if she wanted oval, not round? What if her heart’s set on yellow gold and you’ve already bought white?
I’ve started recommending something to nervous clients that takes almost all of that pressure away: a placeholder ring.
I’ve been speaking with David and Victoria at Proposal Ring, a husband-and-wife team who started making these after using one for their own engagement. The idea is simple. You propose with something beautiful, made specifically for that one knee-down moment and afterwards, you choose the real thing together. No guessing her size. No guessing her taste. Just a ring that photographs beautifully on the night and a proper reason for a second, shared adventure together: shopping for the forever ring.
One detail I especially love is that these rings are designed to properly adjust, so if the size is guessed slightly wrong on the night, it isn’t the disaster it sounds like. To anyone watching, it looks exactly like a traditional, solid band but it can quietly move to fit her properly the moment she says yes.
I also get asked a lot whether a placeholder will look right in the photos and it absolutely does. These rings are set with moissanite rather than a diamond and if anything it catches the light even more brilliantly on camera. Looking back at the pictures years from now, no one would ever guess it wasn’t the real thing.
It’s not for everyone. Some people know exactly what their partner wants and wouldn’t dream of proposing with anything else. But for the clients who’ve spent weeks agonising over a decision that was never meant to be made alone, I’ve watched this take the whole weight off their shoulders.
If it sounds like it might take the pressure off yours too, you can see their collection at proposalring.co.uk.
