Planning a Proposal at Amberley Castle
There are some venues that remind me exactly why I love what I do and Amberley Castle is one of them.
A few weeks ago, on a beautiful and rather hot summer’s day, I travelled down to West Sussex to revisit the castle. The reason for my visit was a particularly exciting one: The One Romance is now an approved and recommended proposal planner for Amberley Castle.
Having planned a beautiful proposal here before, it was wonderful to return and walk the grounds again, reminding myself of just how many spaces we can transform for future clients. And there are a lot of them.
Proposing at a Real Castle
There is something undeniably romantic about the idea of proposing at a castle. Hidden away in the West Sussex countryside, Amberley Castle has everything you could hope for: historic stone walls, towers, beautiful gardens, atmospheric interiors and quiet corners that feel made for a private moment.
What I love most about this venue is that no two proposals here need look the same. Depending on your personalities, your story and the kind of moment you’re picturing, we can design something completely different within the castle walls.
An Intimate Proposal in the King Charles I Room
For something private, elegant and quietly atmospheric, the King Charles I Room is a beautiful choice. With its wood-panelled walls, beamed ceiling and original fireplace it lends itself perfectly to an intimate proposal followed by private dining.
I can already picture this room transformed: candlelight, soft florals, photographs and the small personal details that tell the story of a couple’s relationship so far. It would be a lovely fit for an autumn or winter proposal, when you want somewhere cosy, romantic and completely private. Once the question has been asked and the champagne opened, you can simply stay put and celebrate over dinner together.
A Romantic Proposal in Your Castle Bedroom or Suite
Sometimes the biggest surprise is waiting behind your own bedroom door. Amberley Castle has just 19 individually designed bedrooms and suites, each with its own character, some with original architectural features and views across the grounds, lake or surrounding countryside.
While you’re away at dinner or exploring the castle, our team can quietly transform your room ready for your return. Imagine opening that door to find it filled with candles, flowers, photographs, love notes and the sort of personal touches that could only have been made for the two of you.
It’s a lovely option too if you want the proposal itself to be truly intimate: no audience, nowhere to rush off to afterwards, just your own private space in a castle to celebrate becoming engaged.
A Candlelit Proposal at the Portcullis
For a little more drama, the Portcullis is an incredible backdrop. This is a spot where we can really play with atmosphere: arriving as dusk falls to flickering candles, lanterns, soft florals and firelight, all set against the castle’s historic stone.
There’s something wonderfully romantic about proposing at the entrance to a real medieval castle and the architecture here does so much of the work for us. We don’t need to overwhelm the space with decoration, just use it thoughtfully to enhance what’s already an extraordinary setting. For a proposal with real sense of occasion, particularly as the light begins to fade, I think the Portcullis could look spectacular. I imagine something like this AI image I created below.
A Proposal Amongst the Castle Ruins
One of my favourite spots from my recent visit was the ruins within the castle grounds. Ancient stone walls and arches, surrounded by planting, make for the most incredible natural backdrop, with so many beautiful angles for the proposal itself and for photographs afterwards.
For the right couple, I’d keep the styling elegant and sympathetic to the surroundings: florals, candles and considered personal touches rather than anything that tries to compete with the setting. It’s romantic, historic and just a little bit magical.
A Picnic Proposal by the Lake
The lakeside area holds a particularly special memory for The One Romance, because this is where we planned Brian’s proposal to Ivy. We created an intimate picnic beside the water with lanterns, fairy lights, wine, a handwritten love letter and a handful of personal touches just for them.
It’s still one of my favourite examples of how a proposal doesn’t need to be huge to feel deeply special. Returning to that same spot on my recent visit brought all of it back. Surrounded by greenery, wildflowers and water, it feels completely different from the more dramatic parts of the castle: secluded, relaxed and quietly romantic. I’d love to plan another lakeside proposal there one day, designed completely differently for the next couple and their story.
And If You Want to Go Bigger…
Of course, Amberley Castle also gives us the chance to create something considerably more spectacular. For the right celebration, there’s the option of fireworks and for clients wanting a truly memorable entrance, the castle even has its own helipad.
So yes, arriving by helicopter, proposing at a medieval castle and celebrating with fireworks is very much the sort of brief we’d love to receive.
But you don’t need fireworks, a helicopter or hundreds of flowers to make Amberley Castle feel magical. That’s one of the things I love most about this venue. Your proposal could be an intimate candlelit moment for two, a relaxed picnic by the lake, a beautifully decorated bedroom, private dining after you’ve asked the question or a bigger celebration spread across several parts of the castle. What matters is that it feels like you.
Why I Personally Visit Our Proposal Venues
Site visits are such an important part of what we do at The One Romance. A photograph can tell me a room is beautiful. What it can’t tell me is what your partner will see as they walk through the doorway, where our photographer can discreetly stand without ruining the surprise, how the evening light falls, how we bring equipment into a space without being seen or which corner feels the most private and romantic when you’re actually standing in it.
These are the details that matter when you only get one chance at the surprise. Walking around Amberley Castle again gave me so many new ideas, which is fortunate, because I’m already working on two new proposal enquiries there. I can’t wait to see what we create next.
Planning Your Amberley Castle Proposal
The One Romance is delighted to be an approved and recommended proposal planner for Amberley Castle. If you’re considering proposing here, we can work with you and the hotel to plan the whole experience, from choosing the right location within the castle to designing your décor and arranging flowers, photography, musicians and all the personal touches that make it feel like you.
No two proposals we create are ever quite the same. Before we design anything, we want to know about the two of you. How did you meet? What does your partner love? Which moments from your relationship together mean the most? Are they someone who’d adore a big surprise or would they prefer something quietly intimate that feels as though nobody else in the world knows it’s happening?
Then we build your version of Amberley Castle.
Because if you’re going to ask one of the biggest questions of your life in a castle, we think the moment should be every bit as extraordinary as the setting.
Frequently Asked Questions About Proposing at Amberley Castle
How far is Amberley Castle from central London?
Amberley Castle sits in the West Sussex countryside, near Arundel and on the edge of the South Downs. It’s close enough to London for a romantic overnight escape, while feeling a world away once you arrive. I travelled by train for my own site visit and loved being able to relax and catch up on emails rather than sit in traffic.
Can you propose at Amberley Castle?
Absolutely. Amberley Castle is a wonderfully romantic setting for a marriage proposal and The One Romance is proud to be an approved and recommended proposal planner for the hotel. We work with you and the Amberley Castle team to create a proposal built entirely around you and your partner, handling the planning, styling, logistics and suppliers so you can focus on the important part: asking the question.
Where is the best place to propose at Amberley Castle?
That depends entirely on the kind of proposal you’d like. For something elegant and intimate, I love the King Charles I Room. For drama and atmosphere, the historic Portcullis is wonderful, especially as daylight fades. The castle ruins offer a beautiful outdoor setting steeped in history and the lakeside area suits a softer, more relaxed proposal. Alternatively, one of the castle’s bedrooms or suites can be secretly decorated while you’re at dinner, ready for a completely private surprise on your return. Part of our job is helping you find the area that best suits your partner and the moment you’re hoping to create.
Can you decorate a bedroom or suite at Amberley Castle for a proposal?
Yes. A beautifully decorated bedroom or suite is one of the most intimate ways to propose here. We design the decoration around your story, using candles, flowers, photographs, love notes and personal details. Our team works with the hotel to arrange access and complete the transformation while you and your partner are elsewhere, so the surprise stays a surprise until you open the door. With 19 individually designed bedrooms and suites at Amberley Castle, we can also help you choose a room that works particularly well for your plans.
Can The One Romance organise my entire Amberley Castle proposal?
Yes, and this is where we can make things wonderfully easy for you. As an approved and recommended proposal planner for Amberley Castle, we plan and coordinate everything from the initial idea through to the moment your partner says yes. That includes helping you choose the right area of the castle, creating the concept and styling, arranging décor, flowers, photography, musicians and any other special touches, and liaising directly with the castle over logistics.
